Time
California is in the Pacific Time Zone (GMT minus 8 hours). The state observes daylight saving time.
Taxes
The state sales tax is 7.25%. Local taxes may be as much as 1.25%.

Toll-free calls
Not all 800, 877, and 888 numbers work outside the U.S. Try a direct toll number or a fax.
Emergency assistance
You can call 911 toll free from any public telephone to obtain police, fire, or medical assistance.
Liquor laws
Alcohol is sold throughout California. Legal drinking age is 21.
Smoking
You must be 18 to purchase tobacco products. Smoking is prohibited on public transportation and in public buildings. Most restaurants and bars have no-smoking policies. Local ordinances vary widely; check before you light up.
Marriage licenses
Visit any county courthouse and show valid identification. You must be 18, or have consent of a parent or legal guardian. No blood test is required. There is no waiting period. Cost: $40-$60. The license is valid for 90 days.
Traveling to Tijuana/Baja
U.S. citizens may be asked to show proof of citizenship. For longer stays or trips south of Ensenada, you'll need a tourist card, available from the Mexican Embassy. Be aware that U.S. insurance is typically not valid in Mexico. However, short-term insurance is available for purchase near the border.

Travelers with Disablities
General
The Americans with Disabilities Act provides that all public buildings be wheelchair accessible and have accessible rest rooms. Most hotels and attractions are now outfitted with wide doorways and wheelchair ramps. Most city sidewalk corners have dropped curbs, and some public transit vehicles are equipped with lifts. Whenever possible, call destinations in advance to inquire about access.
National Parks
The Golden Access Passport is a free lifetime entrance pass for U.S. citizens and residents to federally operated public lands. The passport also provides discounts on other fees. Available at any National Park Service headquarters.

Call California Relay Service call 711 for TDD-to-voice or voice-to-TDD relays

Driving Regulations
Required Documents
You must carry a valid driver's license from your home state or country. The minimum age for drivers is 16 with training, 18 without.
Drinking and Driving
It is illegal to operate a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol level of .08% or higher. If arrested for driving under the influence, you must submit to a chemical test to determine blood alcohol content.
Seat Belts/Restraints
Seat belts must be worn by all passengers. Children under 6 years old or weighing less than 60 lbs. must be in an approved safety seat.
Helmets
Required for bicyclist under 18 years old and all motorcyclists.
Road Conditions
Call the California Department of Transportation for 24-hour information at (916) 445-1534.
Vehicular Accidents
You must report an accident to the Department of Motor Vehicles if anyone is injured or killed, or if more than $500 in damage is incurred.
"Right on Red"
You may turn right at a red light after making a full stop, unless signs indicate otherwise.

Customs
You must complete customs and immigrations formalitiesat the first point of arrival in the U.S., whether or not it's your final destination.
Travel Insurance
There is no compulsory or government plan in the U.S. You are advised to purchase travel and health insurance in case of an emergency.
Currency
Most large banks and several independent bureaus exchange major foreign currencies. Airports in Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, and San Jose have currency exchange offices in the international arrival halls. Traveler's checks in U.S. dollars and credits cards are widely accepted.
Electricity
Electrical current is 110 volts.
